How to read this map

  • An EPC rates a home from A (most efficient) to G. Each home counts once, by its latest certificate, however old. Homes that have never had a certificate aren't counted.
  • "Private let" means the latest certificate was lodged for a private letting. A home let since a sale certificate counts as not let, so the private-let count is a floor.
  • Below C is a position on today's certificates, not a verdict. The government has announced that privately rented homes must reach band C from 1 October 2030, subject to Parliament, and the standard is expected to use reformed EPC metrics, so a D today doesn't mean a home will fail.
  • A certificate lasts ten years. A home being let needs a valid one, so an expired certificate means a new assessment before the next let.
