How to read these figures

  • Positive means good or better current evidence: a grade of Good or Outstanding, an ungraded inspection that confirmed one or found standards maintained, key judgements all Good or better, or a report card with every area at the expected standard or above and safeguarding met.
  • Caution covers evidence short of that, such as Requires improvement, an ungraded inspection that raised concerns, or a report card area that needs attention. Below standard means Inadequate, an Inadequate key judgement, or a report card area needing urgent improvement or safeguarding not met.
  • No current judgement means the school has no inspection of its own we can rely on, often a new school or an academy that opened since its predecessor was inspected.
  • Ofsted stopped single-word overall grades in September 2024. Report cards, used since November 2025, grade areas on a different scale that Ofsted says shouldn't be compared with the old grades. That is why the figures count tones, not grades.
  • Independent schools are inspected by Ofsted or, for members of an independent schools association, by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI). Our Ofsted data covers state-funded schools, so they are counted apart and not in the shares.
  • These are figures for the whole council. They don't say which schools a family could get a place at: we hold no catchment or admissions data.
